Renters Insurance
What is renters insurance?

Renters insurance is an agreement between you and your insurance company that typically covers your personal belongings as well as certain types of incidents you may be held liable for, such as injuries at your residence or property damages you may cause.

Do I need renters insurance?

Renters insurance protects your belongings, provides liability coverage, gives you peace of mind, and some apartment communities and property managers may require it. Get Covered partners exclusively with carriers AM Best rated A- or higher, so your coverage is always backed by a strong, financially stable insurer.

What's covered under my policy?

Standard coverages - These are the coverages offered in most states. Coverages, limits and options may vary by state. Note: Generally, insurance does not cover maintenance or normal wear and tear.

Our standard policies extend coverages to your personal belongings that include:

  • - Clothing
  • - Electronics (TVs, DVD players, etc.)
  • - Furniture
  • - Toys/other games
  • - Tools/power equipment
  • - Appliances you brought into your place (refrigerator, washer/dryer, etc.)

Some belongings have sub-limits or per-item limits. This is detailed in your policy documents. If you have expensive items, please contact your insurance agent to get additional coverage, if needed. If this is for a Get Covered policy please fill out our policy update form: Click Here

Other terms to note within your policy:

Replacement Cost: If you have added this to your policy, then this provides coverage on a replacement cost basis without deduction for depreciation instead of actual cash value.

Personal liability: If you are found legally responsible for injury to another person or damage to another person's property, this coverage may help pay for those damages, up to your policy's liability limit. This may include liability related to pets, though some policy exclusions or limitations may apply.

Medical payments: If a guest is injured at your residence, medical payments coverage is designed to help pay their medical expenses up to the medical payments limit stated in your policy.

What type of events does my policy cover?

Perils: Renters Insurance typically covers a range of perils to cover your personal belongings. Please refer to your policy documents for the full list.

Some commonly covered perils include:

  • - Fire and smoke
  • - Windstorm and Hail
  • - Personal Liability Coverage
What events am I NOT covered for?

Standard exclusions include the following:

  • - Earth Movement
  • - Flood Damage
  • - Power Failure
  • - Neglect
  • - Intentional Loss
  • - War
  • - Nuclear Hazard
  • - Ordinance or Law or Governmental Action

In addition, these are some additional exclusions, limitations, and/or reductions in regards to coverage. Please note endorsement availability and limits are subject to change and vary by state. Refer to your policy documents for your specific coverage:

Policies do not automatically cover the following:

  • - Flood damage – may be available for purchase
  • - Equipment breakdown/wear and tear
  • - Accidental misplacement of personal property

Please note:

  • - Limitations exist on coverage amounts for jewelry, guns, silverware, cash, coins, certain types of collections, art and computers/equipment.
  • - Property and Liability Coverage for automobiles, watercraft and aircraft is limited or excluded.
  • - Replacement Cost property claims are settled on an Actual Cash Value basis until you repair or replace the property.
  • - Losses to insured property intentionally caused by an insured are excluded.
  • - Losses to the dwelling caused by water or sewage from outside the dwelling that backs up through sewers and drains are excluded. - may be available for purchase for personal property
What are my out-of-pocket costs?

Deductible: Your deductible is the portion of a covered loss you are responsible for before your insurance pays the rest. For example, if you selected the $250 deductible and a fire damages your $1,000 couch, you would pay the first $250 and your insurer would cover the remaining $750.

What extra coverages are available?

There are optional coverages that may be available in your state, such as identity theft protection. As you go through the quote flow, you will review applicable coverages. Below include a few examples:

Water Backup Coverage: Our renters insurance policy offers protection for damage to your personal property caused by water that backs up through sewers or drains. In some states, the coverage amount may vary.

Pet Damage: This endorsement provides coverage for property damage caused to the landlord's property by a pet, beyond what is covered by a security or pet deposit.

Identity Theft Protection: This optional coverage helps protect you from the costs and complications of identity theft. Please note this is not available in North Carolina.

Is my spouse covered?

Yes, spouses and family members under the age of 18 are automatically covered while residing at the insured premises. However, if family members are on this policy, you may want to review your current coverage limit.

Is my roommate covered?

Your contents coverage limit applies to the total personal property covered under the policy, regardless of how many insureds are listed. If you're adding a roommate, you may want to review your current coverage limit.
